The skincare world is abuzz about LED face masks, with LED light therapy becoming a sought-after at-home skincare treatment and popular on platforms like TikTok. These masks, priced from £80 to £500, promise benefits like collagen stimulation, acne reduction, and hyperpigmentation management.
Celebrity fans of LED light therapy include Victoria Beckham, Bella Hadid, and Emma Stone. However, finding a mask that’s truly safe and effective for Black skin was essential for me before joining the trend.
LED masks have been used in dermatology for years, but there’s often limited research on their effectiveness for darker skin tones. Aesthetician Alicia Lartey advises that LED therapy can work for all skin tones, with precautions like avoiding retinoids or exfoliating acids and ensuring the skin barrier is healthy.
The LookLit LED Mask by SwearBy Skin
The LookLit Mask, developed by Black-owned SwearBy Skin and priced at £80, promises to help with common concerns for melanin-rich skin, like hyperpigmentation. With three light settings:
red for collagen,
blue for acne, and
yellow for brightening.
It offers an affordable intro to LED treatments. SwearBy Skin’s founder, Shenae Rae, designed this mask after struggling to find laser facials safe for Black skin.
Using the LookLit LED Mask
The LookLit mask is lightweight and user-friendly compared to other bulkier masks. After cleansing, you simply pop it on, select a light setting, and let it work for 10 minutes. It automatically turns off when the session is complete.
SwearBy Skin suggests using it three to four times weekly for visible results, so I dedicated myself to this schedule. Finding the time for 10 minutes in the morning was challenging, but the mask is wireless, so I multitasked during breakfast or emails.
Results After One Month
Using the mask consistently, mostly on the yellow light setting, I noticed that my brightening serums performed better on my skin. My skin has a radiant glow, and I’ve observed fewer new pigmentation spots. However, I wouldn’t say the mask drastically transformed my skin, but I believe it works well as a preventive tool alongside SPF.
Conclusion
Pros: Significantly less expensive than its counterparts. NO wires.
Cons: Not as impactful as hoped
The LookLit mask is an accessible option for those curious about LED therapy for Black skin, but for more severe skin concerns like acne or deep hyperpigmentation, consulting a dermatologist may be more beneficial.
Overall, I’m not sure about continuing my LED journey with the LookLit Mask. I will keep looking as I’m committed to a long-term glow!
