Chebe Butter Review: Black Hair Scalp Treatment

The Chebe Butter journey started when I was searching for a hydrating hair treatment. After watching several videos of African women using Chebe powder for hair care in Chad, I was intrigued.

Chebe powder is a mix of Shébé seeds (from the croton zambesicus plant), mahllaba soubiane seeds, missic stone, cloves and samour resin.

The women explained how mixing Chebe powder with oils and using protective styles had helped them grow long, healthy hair. Inspired by this tradition, I decided to try Chebe-based products myself.

TRY 1: EPIC FAIL. JUST TOO MESSY

TRY 2: The powder was messy and quite difficult to wash out, but buying a pre-made cream ensured a more fuss-free experience.

After researching, I found a creator named YaYa who had formulated her own version of Chebe Butter, making it less messy than the traditional powder. Excited to try, I ordered a jar. When it arrived, I found a thick, whipped butter with an earthy scent. The texture was different than I expected but still seemed promising.

For my first use, I applied Chebe Butter on damp, freshly washed hair, sectioning and twisting it as I went. Initially, the butter didn’t absorb right away, so I added more water, which helped it glide on. My hair looked shiny and felt moisturized, though it was no longer as shiny by the next day but still felt soft.

To fully assess its effects, I incorporated Chebe Butter into my regular wash routine by the third use. This time, I washed, deep conditioned, applied leave-in conditioner, and used Chebe Butter on top. With this layering, the butter absorbed much better, leaving my hair shinier and well-moisturized. The softness lasted for several days.

As for length, that remains to be seen. Chebe is the reason why the women of Chad’s hair never breaks. I think Chebe is more for nourishing, hydrating, and improving moisture retention.

Conclusion

After a few uses, I found Chebe Butter effective in providing shine, softness, and initial hydration. While it doesn’t deliver high shine over time, it does seem to promote softness and manageability. While Chebe Butter may be ideal for those focused on hair growth, I’d likely explore other products at a lower price to meet my own hair needs.
